FINDING THE RIGHT TYPE OF LENS
Not all contact lenses are the same and this variety means people with different eye care and lifestyle needs can find lenses that work for them. Soft lenses are the most common and they come in a variety of daily and monthly disposable options. Lenses also vary depending on whether you want to use them for permanent or occasional use. There is also a wide range of lenses for people with specific eye shapes and conditions like myopia and astigmatism.
Soft Daily Disposable Lenses
Soft contact lenses, also referred as disposable contact lenses, are an economical solution for part-time wearers as well as those who want a convenient, no-fuss daily contacts as there are no solutions or cleaning required.
Soft Monthly/Fortnightly Lenses
Certain soft contact lens models can be worn overnight but the vast majority do require cleaning and storing on a nightly basis. Ideal for those who want a better value option to daily disposables.
These contacts are used to correct distance and near vision simultaneously. Disposable or monthly/fortnightly lenses are available which will determine the need for solutions and care.
EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) Lenses
This new technology and can often give better vision for patients wanting to be able to see distance, intermediate (desktop PC range) and reading all at the same time. They can correct some astigmatism and are also used for Myopia Management in children
Also used to correct astigmatisms, toric contact lenses are specially designed to fit the shape of the eye. Disposable or monthly/fortnightly lens options are available which will determine the need for solutions and care.
Gas Permeable Lenses
A type of hard contact lens used to shape the eyeball to correct astigmatisms or very high prescriptions, gas permeable lenses offer certain users more comfort than soft alternatives.
Aftercare appointments are usually recommended every 6 months by us or can be done annually if you prefer. This is the best way of checking the health of your eyes as sometimes changes can happen without you realising.
We ask you to arrive wearing the lenses, ideally 1 to 2 hours beforehand. The optometrist will be interested to learn how comfortable you’re finding the lenses, how long you wear them for and how the vision with them compares to when you wear your glasses. You should always bring your glasses to this appointment as well as when you take your contacts out you can’t re-insert them for an hour after the tests.
Your vision wearing the lenses will be assessed and any additional prescription that may improve the vision is measured. The fit of the lenses will be assessed and then the health of the eyes checked. We will then advise you on how best to tailor your wear to give you optimum comfort and vision in the future.
